Instead of seeing what is on my computer desktop (which is not particularly interesting), here is instead the view from my desk at work...

To the left is the very handsome [livejournal.com profile] fogbear , joining in on the Photo of the Now Meme -- Work on the right (COBOL code for the ones that need to know ;-)

In front, my beloved Starbucks Vancouver Mug, which holds the essential 3 times Espresso that I start with each morning...
(Many of my co-workers note that I may have the largest mug in the company... Thanks Starbucks! ;-D)

The flags in the background ... Well - they are there for a reason... Can you guess it ? *LOL*

C-C-C-C-OBOL?

*LOOL*!

Coding-wise, not my favourite - but it's what about 90% of our system is coded in, so it's a necessary evil, I'm afraid...

Heh, one of the larger still-remaining non-auto businesses in town made a whole fortune on supporting COBOL-based legacy systems. COBOL is a funnier language than C!

What's up with the green orthogonal lines on right display?

Those are merely cross-hairs to more quickly find your cursor, since it's not blinking or anything...

Also very handy since COBOL has some restrictions as to what column you can start typing in...
Col #7 is for declaring coments, cols 8 to 11 is for declaring new sections and structure-driven keywords and cols 12 to 80 is for program code... (grossly simplified...)

Just like some editors light up the current line, the crosshairs let me know, where I am both line and column-wise...

Hope that answered your question ;-D

Ok, so it's like good old Fortran77.

Nice to meet you (via urso)
I program in COBOL too!
